San Antonio City Employees Federal Credit Union Customers Prefer Hand Geometry Reader Automation
CAMPBELL, CALIF. - April 16, 2002 - Schlage Recognition Systems, the biometric Access Control component of Ingersoll Rand’s Security Technologies Electronic Control Systems, today announced that the convenience of hand geometry, which positively identifies people themselves, not their keys, cards or codes, is being enthusiastically used by members of the San Antonio City Employees Federal Credit Union to gain access to their safe deposit boxes.
Just prior to last autumn's opening of the credit union's new 21,000 square foot Northwest Branch, which provides state-of-the-art, totally self-service banking to its members and their families, a Schlage Recognition Systems HandKey II hand geometry reader was installed to provide safer and quicker access to members' safe deposit boxes. Located just outside the steel door leading to the boxes, members no longer need to wait in line for a Member Service Representative to admit them into the safe deposit box room.
When a member wants access to her safe deposit box, she enters her four-digit pin code and places her hand in the reader, which compares her hand's length, width, thickness and surface area with the template stored in the HandKey II. The process takes approximately one second and is virtually foolproof. When a match occurs, the door opens, allowing the member to enter, where she opens her safe deposit box with a key.
"Since members who visit this branch tend to be over age 55, we had some fears that they would not be receptive to the hand geometry reader, that they would prefer personalized attention to automation," attests Laura Rodriguez, branch manager. "However, this has not proven to be true. Instead, members have been very receptive. They appreciate that they can immediately get to their boxes. We've had many transfers from other branches because of the HandKey II and are almost sold out of boxes."
According to Rodriguez, each time that the HandKey II reads a member's hand, it updates the hand template inside the reader. This makes the reader very forgiving for her customers, assuring that members can access the safe deposit box room with no problems. As a result of the Northwest branch's success, other San Antonio City Employees Federal Credit Union branches are showing great interest in installing hand geometry readers.
Since HandKey II hand geometry readers can be standalone systems unto themselves, credit unions and other facilities can provide heightened security and customer convenience without installing and wiring panels or connecting to networks. Members and customers do not need to remember to bring cards or keys to the facility to get the increased benefits of automation.
