Airports Coast to Coast Now Taking a Hands On Approach to Security With Biometric Security Solutions from Schlage Recognition Systems

CAMPBELL, CA – August 27, 2002 – Schlage Recognition Systems the biometric access control division of Ingersoll Rand Company Limited (NYSE: IR), today announced that its biometric security solutions are now being evaluated and incorporated at several international and regional airports in the United States, including Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (San Jose, CA); Portland International Jetport (Portland, ME); and Boise Airport (Boise, ID).

“As all airports continue to seek ways to enhance their operational security, it is clear that biometric security solutions, such as Schlage Recognition Systems’ handreaders, can play a vital role in helping airports meet ever-increasing security and safety demands,” said Ralph G. Tonseth, Director of Aviation at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Currently, Portland International and Boise Airport are using Schlage Recognition Systems' biometric handreader verification systems to protect and control access to various areas inside their airports. Mineta San Jose International is evaluating the technology to determine how to potentially incorporate biometrics into their broader access control systems. Schlage Recognition Systems hand geometry technology is the only biometric access system that the airport is currently reviewing.

The Schlage Recognition Systems handreaders analyze more than 90 unique measurements of the size and shape of a person’s hand, taking only a few seconds to complete, and then compares that information to a central database that tracks and monitors employee movements and access to sensitive areas.

“By incorporating and evaluating sophisticated biometric technologies, Mineta San Jose International Airport is demonstrating its commitment to maximize airport security while providing travelers with a more convenient travel environment,” said U.S. Representative Mike Honda (D-San Jose, CA). Recently, Rep. Honda and San Jose Mayor, Ron Gonzales, created the Silicon Valley Blue Ribbon Task Force on Aviation Security and Technology.

The task force of leading Silicon Valley aviation, security and technology experts developed policy recommendations on ways to improve aviation security nationwide through the use of technology, and personally delivered them to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. Martin Huddart, RSI’s General Manager, was a leader of the task force’s Biometrics Subcommittee.

Earlier this year, Salt Lake City International Airport selected Schlage Recognition Systems handreaders to further enhance its security measures. For more than a decade, Schlage Recognition Systems biometric handreaders have represented a key security component at San Francisco International Airport, where more than 18,000 airport employees daily use the handreaders daily to gain protect access to all critical air operations areas, including access to tarmacs.

Schlage Recognition Systems technology also is used at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, where it helps verify the identity of some 50,000 passengers per month. This trusted traveler program has been cited as a model for potential use here in the U.S. to speed airline passengers through tightened security.
